a post of a different colour

I decided to go see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory today, and I had a great time. Johnny Depp is funny, the musical numbers are a hoot, and there's Burton-style whimsy in full swing. I'm keen to pick up the soundtrack as soon as I can. Oh, and I should note that the usual barrage of pre-movie ads was as irritating as ever, all the trailers happened to be for Corpse Bride, King Kong, Harry Potter, and Wallace and Gromit. Not a bad line-up.

I saw the movie at the Paramount (whilst waving bye-bye to one more piece of my soul), and there's a Chapters just underneath it, and what with it being quarter to midnight when I got out I thought I might as well back off my vague moratorium on buying hardcover books and pick up Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. There were several witches and wizards in attendance, but the most noteworthy thing was that the line-up was almost all adults (although I suppose midnight in the club district on a Friday night might be one of those "no no" places for taking one's kids).

Oh, and since I got back I got the last episode of Deadwood season two downloaded, along with the first episode of Battlestar Galactica season two, which premiered tonight (along with Charlie and Harry). It was a good day for geeks.

Now I'm going to pat myself on the back for not staying up till 5 AM watching Deadwood and Battlestar Galactica, when it's equally likely that I'll be up till then reading once I settle into bed and crack open HPatHBP.

Addendum: Ok. Here I am an hour after I typed that last paragraph. I spent the intervening hour working on a new LJ icon based on Sky High. For this embarrassment, I have an excuse. You see, Messrs. Foley and MacDonald, of the holy quintet Kids in the Hall, are in this movie, and they show up in the trailer. Kevin MacDonald's character has a giant brain, and I'm committed to capturing the beauty in LJ icon form. Just not tonight.

Sounds like a blast. I'm really looking foreward to seeing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
